Bohemian Barn Weddings are the New “Rustic”

Bohemian style can mean something different to everyone, and certainly everyone has their own spin that they put on boho chic style. Outdoor barn weddings in the Blue Ridge Mountains certainly would be an ideal setting for a bohemian style wedding. If it is one thing that says boho, it is having an outdoor wedding complete with the river valley as your backdrop.

The New River is one of the oldest rivers in the world. It is widely considered by scientists to be the third oldest river in the world, behind the Nile River and the Finke. It is responsible for carving out the New River Gorge. If you are looking for the ideal bohemian barn wedding location, think about getting married next to a river that has a long-standing reputation.

These days we are seeing brides opt for a more bohemian feel than what we would label, “rustic.” Couples are replacing the standard wooden and farmhouse elements of a rustic wedding, with more meaningful, artsy types of accents and wedding design elements.

Think of bringing in elements that mean more to you as a couple and that create a tapestry of fun memories for you and your guests. Ask your family and friends to help you with bohemian accents. For instance, if your great Uncle Clifford has an amazing teapot and teacup collection in beautiful patterns that he would be willing to lend you for the event, think about using some of his cup wear for décor or tabletop arrangements rather than the rustic wedding staple, mason jars. Also, houseplants and air plants make a great accent to bohemian barn weddings.

Woven textiles in different fabrics, patterns and textures will make your event more bohemian than opting for the typical ‘burlap and flowers’ that one might see in a typical rustic barn wedding. Fabrics are easy to acquire and have cut in a variety of lengths and sizes. Just head to the nearest fabric store, for a bonus, you might check out vintage stores as they sometimes carry vintage fabrics. Lace and macramé are also a nice touch. Bohemians really knew how to relax and have fun. Use lounge furniture throughout the venue and off to the sides of your reception site, away from tables. Think couches and rugs with geometric coffee tables and coffee table décor.

Items such as dreamcatchers, crystals and geodes are fun elements that you can add to your bohemian barn wedding tables or favors. We’ve seen couples string up wire and strings and place photographs from their history, or their family histories across the string for an added bit of bohemian décor inside of areas of the barn.

As for the bohemian bridal style, we love seeing bridal crowns incorporated into the bridalwear, or as an option instead of using a traditional veil. Skip the bridal burlap and covered ribbon and opt for feathers. Feathers are always great with flowers in a bohemian wedding. Lots of flowers will make your bohemian wedding spectacular and having a cascading bridal bouquet is especially beautiful. Wearing your hair in loose curls and incorporate braids would be an whimsy bohemian style.
